The Basics

What Is a Lab-Grown Diamond?

A lab-grown diamond is a real diamond — same carbon crystal structure, same optical, thermal and chemical properties as a mined diamond — created above ground in a laboratory. Two methods reproduce the conditions under which diamonds form deep in the earth: HPHT (high pressure, high temperature) and CVD (chemical vapor deposition). The result is optically identical: a trained gemologist cannot tell them apart without specialised equipment, and every stone is graded by IGI or GIA under the same standards.

How they are made

In CVD, a tiny diamond seed is placed in a vacuum chamber filled with carbon-rich gas. Heat and microwaves break the gas molecules, and carbon atoms settle onto the seed, growing a rough diamond one atomic layer at a time — typically in two to four weeks. The rough stone is then cut and polished by master cutters, exactly like a mined diamond.

Why OENLI chooses lab-grown

Lab-grown diamonds deliver the same fire and brilliance at roughly 50–70% less cost, with a fully traceable origin, no mining impact, and uncompromised ethics. Every OENLI stone is certified, and we invite you to compare them side by side — with your own eyes.

To the naked eye — and to the loupe — there is no visible difference. Both are 100% carbon with a hardness of 10 on the Mohs scale. The choice comes down to budget, ethics and traceability. That is why we made lab-grown our specialty: it lets you buy a larger, higher-grade diamond for the same budget, with a clear conscience.

Proven Quality

Certification & Grading

Every OENLI diamond over 0.25ct ships with an independent IGI (International Gemological Institute) or GIA (Gemological Institute of America) grading report. The certificate records the stone’s 4Cs — carat, color, clarity, cut — plus measurements, symmetry, polish and fluorescence. It also confirms the stone’s origin as laboratory-grown.

We also laser-inscribe the girdle of every diamond with a microscopic serial number matching the certificate, so your stone can always be positively identified. Scan the QR code on your certificate to view your diamond’s grading report online.

The Language of Quality

The 4Cs

Cut

The most important C — how well a diamond’s facets interact with light. Ideal and Excellent cuts maximize brilliance and fire. At OENLI every round stone is ideal-cut, and fancy shapes are selected for superior proportions.

Color

The absence of body color, graded D (colorless) to Z (light yellow). OENLI stocks D–H color — the whitest, most valuable grades.

Clarity

The absence of inclusions, graded from Flawless to Included. OENLI stones range VVS1–VS2 — eye-clean and brilliant.

Carat

Weight, not size. One carat equals 0.2 grams. Because lab-grown diamonds cost less, your budget buys a larger carat weight at the same quality.

Speaking Diamond

Diamond Glossary

4Cs
The four universal quality factors: cut, color, clarity and carat.
Brilliance
The white light reflected back to the eye from a diamond’s crown and table.
CVD
Chemical Vapor Deposition — a method of growing lab-grown diamonds from carbon-rich gas.
Fire
The flashes of spectral color a well-cut diamond disperses.
Girdle
The narrow band around a diamond’s widest point, where it is set into the mounting.
HPHT
High Pressure, High Temperature — a growth method replicating natural diamond formation.
Inclusion
A tiny internal imperfection; fewer inclusions mean higher clarity.
Pavé
French for “paved” — many small diamonds set closely together.
Solitaire
A single diamond mounted alone — the classic engagement silhouette.
Table
The large flat top facet of a diamond, through which light enters.
